UPDATE: Good news from Golden Boy matchmaker Roberto Ortiz.
I asked him, does Tureano get paid at least a portion of his purse?
“We will pay him 50% of his purse,” Ortiz told me, “plus he received an advance for training that we will not deduct and most importantly schedule him as soon as possible.”
MY THREE CENTS: Good to hear, good to know, good news from GBP.

On the list of annoying things that happen to a prizefighter in this strange life they lead, getting a fight cancelled on you at the last minute is a doozy.

On the list of annoying things that happen to a prizefighter in this strange life they lead, getting a fight cancelled on you at the last minute is a doozy.
Tureano Johnson looked ready to rock and felt in a good head space Thursday night; he had jelled with trainer Andre Rozier, he’d picked up some solid techniques, especially regarding his defense, and he thought he had a very, very good chance to score the win over Canadian power puncher David Lemieux.
Then, Thursday evening, things started to slide…
“They (Team Lemieux) asked if we couldn’t make weight we could bump up to two more pounds. But we’re good with our weight. So, I told them we were good. Friday morning at the weigh-in I found out that he was in the hospital.”
Indeed; Lemieux was at a local NYC hospital, getting his vitals checked, because his people didn’t like how he was looking. He is today OK, but the fight is scrapped.
Tureano had done his job, to the point, but because the other guy wasn’t able to get his weight right, he’d be deprived of the opportunity to make a heady splash at the Mecca, Madison Square Garden, maybe to the extent he’d land a megabucks shot at cash cow Canelo.
“Learning about it was not a good feeling at all,” the 34 year old with an 20-2 mark told me.
You might be wondering, does Tureano get paid his purse, or no?
Does he at least get a portion?
“Not sure yet. I hope I get something,” he shared.
As do we…
