On Saturday July 20th , live from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, aside from the main event, the Fox Sports headliner is just as interesting as IBF super middleweight Champion Caleb Plant (18-0) will be going up against Mike Lee (21-0).
This fight definitely has the attention of boxing purists as the champion is going up against a guy who is coming down from the light heavyweight division for this title opportunity.
Here is a look at what they both bring to the table in anticipation of the battle this Saturday evening.
Truth be told not too long ago, many of the boxing media and fans were running out of patience with Caleb Plant as he was winning fights but wasn’t necessarily putting on “must see tv” performances. As he climbed the boxing rankings, he finally positioned himself for a title shot which came in January of this year against Jose Uzcategui.
After this extremely gutsy performance, the boxing world accepted and embraced the new champion as he gave the type of performance that everyone was looking for these past few years. Recently, Fox Sports did their “Portrait of a Fighter” on Caleb Plant and if you were not a fan of the champion prior to this, then you absolutely would be after seeing some of the real life events he had to overcome to get to this moment.
Caleb Plant has yet another opportunity to show his talents but this time it will be in front of a much larger audience and on a card that features a future hall of famer. Can the Champion Plant replicate or surpass the type of performance he gave in January this year?
Next, we have the curious case of the man named Mike Lee from Chicago, Illinois. The challenger accepted the title shot opportunity even though it’s in a division lower than what he normally campaigns at. Although Mike Lee has been very active with magazine covers, commentating and charitable events which have all raised his profile, he hasn’t necessarily been too active in the ring. Mike Lee’s last fight in June of last year against Jose Hernandez, resulted in a ten round unanimous decision. In 2017, he only fought twice and some tend to look at this level of inactivity as problematic when going for a title opportunity against a guy like Plant. Given his inactivity, is Mike Lee ready to shock the world and give boxing another upset victory in 2019?
Mike Lee is more than likely going to be coming into this one with a clear size advantage so the key for him will be to use that size to wear down the champion in hopes of a late stoppage.
IBF champion Caleb Plant will need to use his legs and avoid getting into a phone booth type of fight so that he can cruise to a decision victory.
This Saturday, we will either see the challenger Mike Lee win a world title or the champion Caleb Plant continue his remarkable story leading to a possible unification fight in 2020. You will have to tune into Fox this Saturday to see how this one plays out
