Garcia v Thurman Presser Report/2 Days Away

Danny Garcia is used to having his dad by his side, chattering, having his back, jabbing at foes, yelling epithets, declaring this and that “bullshit,” talking about how far they have come, the Garcia guys.

But at the Thursday press conference to bang the last drums for the Saturday Barclays Center show topped by Garcia and fellow welter ace Keith Thurman, up on the stage, it was just Danny.

Dad was thirty feet away, sitting in a chair, not muzzled but somewhat sequestered. This is because at the presser to kick things off two months ago, he went off. It was one of his more, if not most memorable tirades. He thundered at Thurman, used beyond salty language, and drew a mass of tsk tsks from all circles. The NY State Athletic Commission was appalled and called Crazy Angel to the carpet. You best smarten up, they told him, if you want to work the kid’s corner Saturday. He would, he said. And part of that was this sequester at the presser…

He did hold it together, and I heard a few folks talking about how it gave Danny the opportunity to show of HIS personality. The 33-0 WBC champ took to the mic and said he’d prove yet again he was underrated, that he’d stay unbeaten. Then, he paused, and threatened to read a letter written by dad. Perfect pause, and then he admitted he was joshing. The gag got a good burst of laughs.

Apart from that, it was all the usual. Lou Dibella, the promoter, said that trends indicated that this card will set records for boxing attendance and the building boss Brett Yormark said he thinks it could set a non-Nets record for gross, and beat the February UFC promotion.

Thurman (27-0) told us that he’s been waiting about all his life for this, that he’s been doing it for 21 years, and he’s amped to soak up the spotlight. He shared more at the smaller scrum, telling us that he’s studied Garcia real close as he called his last two fights ringside. He knows what it looks like when he’s looking to load up on the left hook. Bottom line, he’s the more versatile boxer and thinks his power will prove damaging to the Philly boxer, he said. Garcia and dad told the media that he was as confident as ever. All the work has been done in camp, now it is time to execute, Angel said. Danny mentioned he thought Thurman was posturing, trying to act tough, during the staredown. Angel wanted to say that it looked like Thurman was showing off “retard strength” but said he didn’t want to get into trouble by being politically incorrect.

Next up, the scale will tell the tale. They weigh in at the LIU/Barclays building in Brooklyn tomorrow (Friday). Then, fight night, and the waiting, that hardest part, melts away, and the two will answer quesions, in a flurry of fists and sweat. You can watch on CBS.

“I fight to win. I fight to secure my family's future and that's what it's all about. That's what we train so hard for. I'm going to give the fans something to watch on Saturday.

“Legacy is very important to me. I have more milestones than Thurman. This is his biggest fight. I've been in big fights before. Every championship fight is a part of history.

“People say he's the bigger man because he's been at this weight longer than me. I'm taller than him, I'm wider than him and I have a bigger back than him. I feel like I'm the fresher welterweight.
