Broner vs Matthysse…Fact or Fiction?

That boxing rumor mill is in heavy grind mode. We saw Andre Ward retire and Danny Jacobs head to HBO and it looks like Jarrell Miller is switching from the Showtime tracks to the HBO side, for now.

Lots of things cooking and people are wondering if there are more pots a-stirring. Also, the last quarter of the year in boxing needs filling out and a bunch of the top tier lads are looking for their next.

One matchup we’ve been hearing could be in the works is a comeback scrap for Lucas Matthysse..

..who last fought in May, scoring a TKO over vet Emmanuel Taylor in Vegas. That scrap was for some lesser welterweight titles. Matthysse is 35, likely his best days are behind him, but his recognition factor is still considerable. Another person with a high recognition factor is Adrien Broner. He looked lean and mean coming in to his last fight, against Mikey Garcia, but apart from the odd surge, he was dominated by Mikey handily in their July face off. That took place at 140 pounds, but we heard rumblings that Golden Boy wanted to make a Lucas vs AB fight. And that GBP was signing Broner.

Any truth to that, Eric Gomez, Golden Boy exec?

“No,” Gomez said, flat out. “Not true.”

Mattyhsse won’t step into the squared circle again until 2018, he noted.

So, this rumor mill offering seems like just smoke, no fire, friends.
