RIGO: “This Is the Only Fight I Wanted”

Guillermo Rigondeaux is undenianly talented, but his rep has been on a bumpy ride for the last few years. His skill set is sublime, but boo birds have attacked his style, and after he parted ways with ex promoter Top Rak, and TR boss Bob Arum lobbed some choice words at he and his crew afterwards, the Rigo train lost momentum.

He signed on with Roc Nation and lobbied to get Vasyl Lomachenko into the ring, for a battle of chessmasters, the Cuban master versus the Eastern Euro ring general. Naysayers thought Rigo would price himself out and the fight woldn’t come to fruition, but guess what. The tango is signed and sealed and will be delivered on ESPN, from the Madison Square Garden Theater, Dec. 9. Think of this as an early Xmas gift for fans of the sweet science.

“This is the only fight I wanted,” Rigo told me. “I am glad Loma is not the kind boxer that run from a challenge.”
