Monaghan Miffed, Adonis Stevenson Fighting Fonfara Next

It was supposed to be the opportunity of his boxing life, the shot to be heard round the fistic world, Sean Monaghan against Adonis Stevenson, in Seanie's neck of the woods.

A win would be an upset victory that would catapult Monaghan's profile to the highest ground, and his nest egg to cushier.

Now, the upset is centered on the fickle whims of fate.

Stevenson tweeted out his plan for next, and it doesn't include Monaghan.

The Haitian hitter, based in Canada, will fight Andrzej Fonfara in June, a rematch of their 2014 contest. Adonis took the W over the Pole, who has since been down (he was stopped by another LI 175er, Joe Smith) and then up again (he took up Pilates and beat Chad Dawson last month).

Monaghan heard the word and yes, he's not pleased. Emojis were used when he answered my query indicating he's displeased. Does he have a plan b? “I don't know bro,” Monaghan (age 35; 28-0) said. “I'm sick right now.”

It's a nasty lesson that saps many a fighter. Well laid plans are thisclose to being consummated…and then go off rail. Seanie was going to face Adonis and dominate the fan decibel war in the revamped Nassau Coliseum. But their boxing program is still being ironed out, so Billy Joel and other fare is holding down their fort.

Meanwhile, it is back to a familiar status for Monaghan.

He will wait…and stay in shape…maybe throw a prayer or ten to the man or woman upstairs to influence fate in his favor.

Bottom line, outsiders don't always get, a great deal of fighting occurs outside the ring, and it can prove grueling and soul sapping.
