Does Gvozdyk Have A Foe For March Bout?

on

Oleksandr Gvozdyk scored what was notable upset win in the eyes of many oundits when he beat Adonis Stevenson on Jan. 1, and helped himself to the WBC light heavyweight strap.

That result was over-shadowed by the brain trauma that affected Stevenson, age 40, who collapsed post fight, was taken to the hospital, and was placed in a coma by docs to relieve pressure on his brain. Good news; the fighter has since woken from the coma and is a road to recovery and rehabilitation.

Meanwhile, the show fors on for the Ukrainain hitter Gvozdyk, nicknamed “The Nail.” He’s promoted by Top Rank, and Bob Arum and managed by Egis Klimas, who also helps guide Vasyl Loamcehnko, and Sergey Kovalev.

Last Wednesday, Top Rank bossman Arum spoke about forthcoming matches involving Top Rank talent. The light heavyweight class is humming, he said, and mentioned Gvozdyk as one of the major league players in that space. The 16-0 boxer, who is 31 years old, is slated to glove up on March 30, in Philly. Boxrec says he’s to tussle with TBA, but Arum mentioned that The Nail would be scrapping with a French/African pugilist.

Was he referring to 38-8 Kinshasa-born right-hander Doudou Ngumbu? The 36 year old boxer, who calls France his home, is rated No. 6 by the WBC. He comes in on a high note, having downed on May 25, 2018 then 11-0 Swiss-based hitter Yoann Kongolo, after having been stopped by Igor Mikhalkin in December 2017.

Word on the street is that the fight is up for grabs, and whoevers’ visa get processed first could get it. Could be Ngumbu, or some other lucky outside the US pugilist.

This is the boxing world we live in, in 2019.
