After coming short on points when he fought for the WBC super featherweight title in February, Abraham Nova is set to face a young undefeated boxer in Las Vegas this weekend. Is Andres Cortes ready for this step up in competition? Here is our Cortes vs Nova prediction.
Cortes vs Nova Prediction: WBO #2 against WBC #4
Andres Cortes Preview
Andres Cortez is a 26-year-old American boxer who has been competing professionally since 2016. “Savage” had 21 fights since then, winning all of them with 12 knockouts.
Cortes has been rising through the boxing ranks with every victory and is now ranked #2 by the WBO and #14 by the WBC. And while Abraham Nova will be his biggest challenge as a professional, Savage has already faced some of the current boxing royalties as an amateur. In 2015, he faced Teofimo Lopez at the National Golden Gloves Tournament and lost, and later faced Devin Haney in the final of the Youth National Championships where he also lost.
In recent times, Cortes captured the WBC USA Silver Super Featherweight title after ripping apart Xavier Martinez in 2023. And in February 2024, he won the WBO Inter-Continental title in the same weight class after taking out Bryan Chevalier.
His technical prowess has guaranteed his victories even when he failed to find a knockout. And while his last early finish was in 2021, no one should underestimate his power. At 26 years of age, he is yet to reach his peak.
Cortes has a bright future ahead of him and he declared that his team has a clear game plan for this fight. Is he ready to put his name among the list of future world title contenders? Continue reading below to see our Cortes vs Nova prediction.
Abraham Nova Preview
Abraham Nova is an experienced 30-year-old Puerto Rican boxer who also had his first fight in the professional ring in 2016. In total, he had 25 fights, in which he was able to win 23 times, 16 of which by knockout.
While Abraham Nova started his career a few months after Cortes and at a higher age overall, he already has more experience than the young American. ‘Supernova' faced three current and former champions in his last four bouts – Robeisy Ramirez, Jonatan Romero, and O'Shaquie Foster. And the defeats to Ramirez and Foster are the only missteps in his entire career.
Just like Cortes, Nova had an impressive amateur career. While we can't guarantee that the numbers are exact, some reports claim that he amassed a 167-11 record as an amateur. He also faced elite names like Jaron Ennis, Frank Martin, and Jamaine Ortiz.
Our Andres Cortes vs Abraham Nova Prediction: Expect a Close Fight
‘Savage' Cortes is an exciting boxer and there is no doubt that we will be seeing him a lot in the future. But is he good enough right now to overcome this massive challenge? When saying massive, we also refer to the fact that Abraham Nova has the size advantage.
The American is 5'7 and has a 65-inch reach next to the 5'9 of the Puerto Rican, who also has a seven-inch advantage in reach. And he knows how to use his anthropometry to control the action during a fight.
In terms of power, we can't really put either ahead of the other. Both are capable of a knockout but we expect to see a long fight, potentially all 10 rounds. But we like the underdog odds for Abraham, so we have to side with him for our Cortes vs Nova prediction.
His experience will play a key role in this bout, although it will not be surprising if Cortes manages to get a narrow win on points. Both fighters are yet to write their names in the history books and while this fight will not earn them a lot of money, it will be huge for their future.
