There’s a slight chance that we’ll see Ilja Dragunov wrestle in Japan in the future.
At AEW WrestleDream, Ilja Dragunov made his highly anticipated debut in All Elite Wrestling. Dragunov previously worked for WWE, where he had many incredible matches. Despite being popular with fans, WWE didn’t seem to have much planned for him on television. In the end, Dragunov declined WWE’s offer for a new contract and became a free agent.
He later signed with AEW and is currently scheduled to make his in-ring debut for the company on the October 21 edition of AEW Dynamite.
Ilja Dragunov Says He Needs To Wrestle In Japan

TMZ’s Inside the Ring recently spoke with Dragunov, where the wrestler was asked about wrestlers he’d like to work with outside AEW. Dragunov didn’t have an answer for that, but he did mention one of the places he’d like to have a match: Japan. Dragunov believes his style of wrestling belongs there.
“I wouldn’t say it’s necessarily who I want to work with, but where I want to work. Back in the day when I started with wXw, they had a working relationship with Big Japan Pro Wrestling. And when I joined wXw, it’s kind of like this time was passed. And the one thing that I didn’t do in my career so far, multiple things that I didn’t do in my career so far, but specifically something that I need to do is to wrestle in Japan. I need to wrestle in Japan. Because that’s the place where I think my style belongs, and I think I would connect with the people, with this culture for professional wrestling in a whole different way.”
Dragunov has never worked for a Japanese promotion before, but with AEW’s partnership with New Japan Pro Wrestling, this could change in the future. AEW wrestlers frequently work New Japan’s shows, and seeing Dragunov wrestle someone like Zack Sabre Jr. or compete in the G1 Climax would be an incredible experience for the fans.
