Cris Cyborg made history at PFL Tampa, but instead of providing clarity about her future, the Brazilian legend may have only created more questions. The longtime veteran picked up the 30th win of her professional career after defeating Ketlen Vieira by unanimous decision in the main event at Benchmark International Arena.

The judges scored the fight 49-46, 48-47, and 49-46, giving Cyborg her 10th consecutive victory and allowing her to retain the PFL women’s featherweight title. Cyborg didn’t get the finish she was hoping for, but she did enough over 25 minutes to leave Tampa with a clear-cut win. The victory improved her professional record to 30-2-1 and extended her unbeaten run to nearly eight years.

The fight was far from easy, though. Vieira came into the contest seven pounds overweight, making her ineligible to win the featherweight title even if she had pulled off the upset. Despite the unusual circumstances, she certainly didn’t fight like someone who was simply there to survive.

From the opening bell, Vieira brought the pressure and forced Cyborg to work from the outside. Cyborg responded by attacking the body with her jab and mixing in leg kicks and power punches, but Vieira’s size and physicality made things difficult for the champion.

Cyborg began finding her rhythm in the second round, hurting Vieira with a nasty calf kick. But Vieira answered back with the biggest moment of the fight, landing a clean punch that buckled Cyborg late in the round. Rather than panic, Cyborg recovered and went back to work.

She continued picking her shots from range while mixing punches to the body, kicks to the legs and heavy shots upstairs. She also started incorporating her wrestling, although Vieira proved more than capable on the ground. The Nova União fighter scored reversals and even found herself on top, where she landed ground-and-pound.

Cyborg looked to take control again in the third round, scoring a takedown and landing heavy ground-and-pound while Vieira closed her guard and threatened with armbars. But whenever the fight returned to the feet, Vieira continued giving the champion problems.

One of the more dramatic sequences came when Cyborg attempted another takedown and Vieira answered with a judo throw. Vieira ended up on top and punished Cyborg with ground-and-pound, leaving the champion bloodied. The Brazilian, however, kept coming.

The fifth round saw the champion push the pace once again. She scored an early takedown, only for Vieira to quickly scramble back up and reverse the position. Vieira then put Cyborg on her back and controlled the action for a significant portion of the round.

With around 90 seconds remaining, Cyborg finally returned to her feet, and the two women emptied the gas tank. They traded punches until the final horn, bringing an entertaining five-round battle to a close. The two fighters combined for 308 total strikes, and when the scorecards were read, Cyborg had her hand raised.

The win was especially significant because this was the final fight on Cyborg’s PFL contract. There had also been plenty of talk that the 39-year-old planned to retire regardless of the result. But judging by her post-fight comments, retirement may not be as certain as it once seemed.

Cyborg said Vieira was a tough outing and declared that she was still ready for more at any weight class. Moreover, she also wasted little time putting some major names on notice. First up was boxing superstar Claressa Shields. Cyborg once again called for a boxing match with Shields, telling her to “eat less” and make 160 pounds for the showdown.

The Brazilian has repeatedly accused Shields of avoiding the matchup and appears to have no intention of letting the rivalry die quietly. Then came Kayla Harrison. The UFC women’s bantamweight champion was in attendance in Tampa supporting her American Top Team teammates. Cyborg wished Harrison a speedy recovery from her neck issues but also accused her of avoiding a fight with her.

Cyborg even suggested she would be waiting inside the cage if Harrison gets through a potential showdown with Amanda Nunes. So, after 30 wins and another championship defense, the biggest question surrounding Cyborg isn’t whether she still has something left.
