Canelo Alvarez heads into his WBC super middleweight title fight against Christian Mbilli with a new global ranking reaffirming his commercial appeal.

He returns in the main event of the “Mexico vs. The World” card this Saturday in Riyadh. It is his first fight since his September 2025 loss to Terence Crawford. The bout was originally scheduled for Sep. 12, but a personal family matter forced officials to postpone the entire card to this Saturday.

A few days ago, SportsPro’s annual marketability index highlighted the 36-year-old’s enduring financial leverage. While the overall rankings placed Anthony Joshua and UFC star Ilia Topuria ahead of him, the data shows the four-division world champion holding an edge in the category that matters most heading into a fight like this one.

Canelo Alvarez Enters the Mbilli Fight Ranked No. 61 on SportsPro’s List

SportsPro’s annual marketability ranking starts with 1,202 athletes across 70 sports. Analysts fully evaluate 247 of them using 27 scoring drivers and more than 3,000 brand partnership records. From this data, SportsPro publishes a headline top 50 alongside an extended top 150.

The model scores each athlete on brand strength, current momentum, and future commercial potential over a 12-month window. For this edition, the evaluation period ran from July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2026. The final score combines three categories: Brand Equity (45 points), Momentum (40 points), and Commercial Trajectory (15 points).

Alvarez ranks No. 61 on the extended list with a score of 58.45. He arrives in Riyadh as the challenger to Mbilli (29-0-1), who defends his WBC super middleweight title for the first time since his promotion from interim champion. A victory would return Canelo to the ranks of world champions.

Topuria leads the combat sports contingent at No. 41 overall with a score of 61.11 out of 100. SportsPro noted that Topuria’s high-profile appearance at UFC Freedom 250 at the White House in June served as a major driver for global media attention.

British heavyweight Anthony Joshua ranks at No. 52 with a score of 59.57. Alvarez trails Topuria by 2.66 points and Joshua by 1.12 points. This margin is small enough to close quickly depending on the outcome of his upcoming fight.

Joshua leads the trio in Brand Equity at 36.55, followed by Alvarez at 33.21 and Topuria at 20.16. Low momentum hurts Alvarez’s rank, as his score of 17.58 sits well below “El Matador” and Joshua’s numbers.

Canelo Alvarez Still Leads in Commercial Trajectory

Alvarez’s Commercial Trajectory score of 8.66 beats Topuria (7.74) and Joshua (1.59). Out of the three tracked categories, this metric remains his strongest, indicating that brands still view Alvarez as a highly valuable commercial force. A convincing performance against Mbilli on DAZN pay-per-view will likely reinforce that value. But any promotional impact from the bout will not show up until next year’s index.

This limitation stems entirely from the strict annual evaluation window. Because data tracking cut off on June 30, the current list cannot account for any events following that date. This exclusion leaves out the Riyadh championship match, the record-breaking December 11 heavyweight clash between Joshua and Tyson Fury, and the commercial fallout from Topuria’s late-2026 and early-2027 fights.
