Recent missile and drone attacks on Riyadh’s international airport have thrown Canelo Alvarez’upcoming boxing card into absolute chaos. With the U.S. government issuing strict travel warnings after reported fatalities on the ground, severe safety doubts leave the high-profile October 31 event looking completely unsafe and unlikely to happen.

With less than three weeks left before fight night, the former undisputed champion has finally broken his silence to organizers facing intense pressure to postpone or relocate the clash.

Turki Alalshikh Says Canelo Alvarez Fears Nothing

On Sept. 29, organizers announced a 12-round fight between Canelo Alvarez and undefeated champion Christian Mbilli for Mbilli’s WBC super middleweight world title. Promoted as “Mexico vs. The World,” the match marks Alvarez’s first fight since losing to Terence Crawford in late 2025.

Alalshikh, chairman of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority, shared the update on Sunday night after Alvarez personally reached out to confirm he intends to proceed.

His post reads, “Canelo reached out and told me he’ll still fight in Riyadh this October, no matter what happens. He fears nothing. My country is home to the two Holy Mosques, land of peace, safety, rich civilization, deep history, and kind-hearted people. Thank you to everyone who checked in and showed support. Hard times reveal true friends.”

His reassurance comes after a Houthi ballistic missile strike hit the passenger complex containing terminals 3 and 4 at King Khalid International Airport on Saturday afternoon. Saudi aviation and health officials confirmed that the strike killed 12 people and wounded 309 others.

Reuters reported it as the deadliest lone attack in the kingdom in over a decade, which was followed by another strike on Sunday that took the life of an additional resident and injured dozens more.

The U.S. Embassy already issued an urgent alert advising citizens to avoid King Khalid International Airport entirely. Saudi authorities subsequently grounded flight operations, leading to a 99.7% cancellation rate.

However, the Halloween matchup is tied directly to a four-fight, $400 million contract that Alvarez secured under the Riyadh Season promotional banner. This agreement guarantees the Mexican superstar a payout of $100 million for his upcoming title challenge against Christian Mbilli.

It is a minor reduction compared to the earnings from his previous ring appearance. In his last bout on September 13, 2025, Alvarez brought home a career-high payday of $150 million despite dropping a 12-round unanimous decision to Terence Crawford.
