Over the past year, El Grande Americano has become one of the most popular luchadors in wrestling. We know that Chad Gable created the character in the first place. The idea was to get heat from the audience, but it later evolved into something much bigger following Gable’s injury in June of 2025.

After that, another wrestler took over the El Grande Americano gimmick, and he ended up becoming a major name for Lucha Libre AAA. Although we’re not sure who the wrestler behind the mask is, there have been numerous rumors of him being Ludwig Kaiser.

Chad Gable Says The New El Grande Americano Made The Character Thrive

Chad Gable Intercontinental Champion

The current WWE Intercontinental Champion Chad Gable spoke with Chris Van Vliet where he commented on the new El Grande Americano taking over his character. Gable said that he watched the character evolve every week on television. While he wanted to come back and take back his creation, Gable also credited the man under the mask for carrying the gimmick on his own and not only keeping it alive but also making it thrive.

“I watched it play out, and on a weekly basis, grew more and more competitively driven to come back and take my character back. At the same time, really kind of grateful for the new Grande carrying it on the way he did, because who knows what would have happened to that character had it just been forgotten until I came back. It may have gotten lost in the shuffle. We may have never got back to any point of importance. So, all credit in the world to him for not just keeping it alive, because he didn’t just keep it alive; he made it thrive.”

El Grande Americano is the face of Lucha Libre AAA as the reigning AAA Mega Champion.

Chad Gable Doesn’t Think Ludwig Kaiser Is El Grande Americano

In the interview, Chad Gable was also asked about the rumor that Ludwig Kaiser is playing El Grande Americano on AAA right now. Gable doesn’t believe that is true. He said:

“Ludwig? I don’t see it. I haven’t seen him for a while, but I don’t see it. The internet’s a wild place!”

Ludwig Kaiser’s last WWE match took place in July 2025 on Main Event, where he wrestled Tyler Bate.

Kayfabe aside, everyone can agree that after Ludwig did take over the El Grande Americano gimmick, the character did reach new heights that may not have been possible before.
