Top Rank has signed more talent, with news out that NY-based power hitter Edgar Berlanga, who was under the Real Deal umbrella, is now fighting under the Bob Arum banner.
Berlanga holds a 9-0 record, to go with 9 KOs.
He is just 21, and has no crisis of confidence in himself, shall we say.
The super middleweight knows he has grenades for hands and likes to show off that fact. He will get the opportunity to show off the skill set on April 20, on the Terence Crawford v Amir Khan topped card at Madison Square Garden’s big room.
“We have signed Berlanga,” Top Rank exec Carl Moretti told me.
He possibly has A grade power, I noted.
Ever practical and not prone to over-selling, Moretti replied, “Possibly. Need to get him on track first. Still a young ‘un.” (See a killer KO from 2017 below)…
We shouldn’t expect Berlanga, of Pueto Rican derivation, to come in tough in MSG; he last gloved up in September 2018, one of three bouts in 2018. He debuted in 2016, and has wracked up nine straight first round KOs. We will see if 37-15-3 Samir dos Santos Barbosa, out of Brazil, can break the streak. But regardless, this guy should be on your watch list. He is part of the new breed who have turned their back on the “skills pay the bills” mindset and he espouses a throwback ‘tude–he comes out looking to remove a foe’s head from their shoulders in minute one.
