Canelo Alvarez, 36, brings a 63-3-2 record with 39 knockouts into his 69th pro fight. He has beaten elite boxer-punchers, heavy hitters and unified champions across four weight classes, including definitive victories over Gennadiy Golovkin, Miguel Cotto, and Caleb Plant.

On Saturday in Riyadh, he challenges unbeaten WBC World Super Middleweight champion Christian Mbilli for his 13th major title. The 31-year-old’s style makes him a tricky assignment at 168 pounds.

Canelo returns after about 13 months away since his September 2025 loss to Terence Crawford. The fight was originally scheduled to take place on Sept. 12, but due to some family issues, it was pushed back by a month.

However, this is no longer a chess match of resumes. It will be a brutal stylistic war. Mbilli will try to overwhelm Canelo with non-stop punches, while Canelo will try to dodge those punches and land his famous, devastating counter-attacks.

Christian Mbilli Says He Must Beat Canelo Alvarez to Prove He Is No. 1

Mbilli (29-0-1, 24 KOs) is a Montreal-based, Cameroonian-French pressure fighter who has stopped about 83 percent of his opponents. He trains under Marc Ramsay and enters as the defending champion. However, he still treats Alvarez as the standard in the division and acknowledges people actually believe Canelo is better than him.

“I am world champion right now, but I have to prove that I am number one,” Mbilli said. “And the thing is, many people know that the numberone right now is Canelo and I have to beat Canelo to prove that I am the number one of the division.”

That confidence is what makes him a risky challenger for Alvarez. Mbilli added, “I’m not Jaime Munguia or Edgar Berlanga. If he’s expecting an easy night, he’ll be the first to pay the price.”

Why Christian Mbilli’s Pressure Style Creates a Genuine Test for Canelo Alvarez

His last fight was a grueling 10-round split draw with Lester Martinez in September 2025, which took place on the undercard of the Alvarez-Crawford event at Allegiant Stadium. But calling him the most dangerous opponent Canelo has picked recently is debatable based strictly on past opponents.

However, Mbilli wins by walking opponents down. He throws in volume, stays on the front foot and makes opponents work hard. This fight comes down to style and timing. Alvarez has sat out for over a year, and Mbilli has never boxed anyone with Alvarez’s counterpunching skills.

Boxing experts and betting sportsbooks strongly favor Alvarez, though doubts persist regarding his current form. Former champion Raul Marquez expects Alvarez to win by decision. He argues that Mbilli’s constant forward pressure plays right into Alvarez’s strengths.

Alvarez has already beaten heavy pressure fighters like Gennadiy Golovkin and Sergey Kovalev by staying back and hitting them to the body. Marquez notes that Alvarez must throw combinations instead of the single, heavy shots that caused him to lose to Terence Crawford.

Martinez, who recently fought Mbilli, calls the match an even split. He respects Mbilli’s non-stop punching pace and looping right hand. Analyst Al Bernstein thinks an upset is highly possible, highlighting that no one knows how Alvarez will perform in Saudi Arabia after a 13-month layoff.

Canelo Alvarez Held Camp at Oleksandr Usyk’s Gym in Spain

Alvarez prepared for this fight in Spain to adjust to the time zone before boxing at night in Riyadh. Heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk and his conditioning staff trained alongside him.

He noted that watching Usyk’s mental approach and meticulous preparation offered valuable lessons for competing at the highest level. Head trainer Eddy Reynoso managed the technical boxing strategy while integrating Usyk’s physical training program.

Organizing such a camp around recovery and adjusting to the time zone shows calculated preparation for the Saudi setting. So, Mbilli has earned a place as a serious and dangerous test. Whatever happens in Riyadh, the matchup raises the stakes for both.
