Gleason’s Gym Has Been Humming Along; The Famed and Fabled Fight Factory Is NYC Institution

Gleason's Gym has been humming, with the typical activity, the rat-a-tat of the speedbags, the whump and thump of heavy bags, the smashes from Johnny Rodz' wrestling students.

And then the less typical; on April 25, the gym, operated by NYC treasure Bruce Silverglade (pictured), played host to a fundraiser for Operation Smile. There was an art auction, and proceeds went to help kids with birth defects.

Then, last week, World 50 came in, and Silverglade shut the gym down for two days, and hosted the group which seeks to use their brains and influence to better the world. The gym atmosphere is different and gives a different vibe, and can lift a gathering to another level.

On May 4, the gym was the site of the Cinco De Mayo Battle For the Belts, a USA Boxing Metro sanctioned event. You could watch bouts from 6-11 PM, for just $25 bucks. The energy and scrappiness of these amateurs is something to behold.

Then, down the line a bit, Silvergalde is amped to do his fantasy camp. He invites one and all, from 8-85 (or older!) to go upstate, to a stellar resort.

Gleason's will host their 17th annual fantasy camp, in August.

There, participants train, and learn from ex champs and legends, like Iran Barkley. They eat awesome food, and watch fight films. “And then there's a white collar show,” he said. He gets people from more than a handful of nations, and just about everyone who attends then reports that this was the time of their life.
