WHAT: Las Vegas boxer Devin Haney faces his toughest test to date when he climbs into the ring tonight against veteran Mexican fighter Juan Carlos Burgos in a 10-round lightweight main event on ShoBox: The New Generation live on SHOWTIME (10 p.m. ET/PT) from Pechanga Resort Casino in Temecula, Calif.
Haney (19-0, 13 KOs) will headline his second consecutive ShoBox main event when he opposes Burgos (33-2-2, 21 KOs), who is a three-time world title challenger. SHOWTIME has released a video feature of Haney and his father William discussing how they got to this stage of the young 19-year-old fighters’ career.
“The statement I want to make in this fight is I want to knock [Burgos] out,” Haney said. “He put up a great fight with Mikey Garcia and I want to show the world that I’m up there with the top guys.”
Added Haney: “Now the world is finally going to see who Devin Haney really is and the skills that I have. I just want to keep showing it. When I win this, a world title should be my next fight.”
Tonight’s ShoBox telecast will also feature the rematch of the controversial July fight that saw Cleveland’s Thomas Mattice (13-0, 10 KOs) survive a second-round knockdown and win a split decision over Zhora Hamazaryan (9-1, 6 KOs). The opener pits two undefeated middleweight prospects against each other as another Los Angeles-based fighter Cem Kilic (11-0, 7 KOs) takes on DeAnde Ware (12-0-2, 8 KOs) of Toledo, Ohio, in the ninth matchup of undefeated prospects of 2018 on ShoBox: The New Generation.
