Sean Strickland is in his second reign as the UFC middleweight champion after a grueling title win against Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 328 in May. The champion was actively targeting a December return to defend his belt while Chimaev moved on from the rematch. But a sudden accident threatens to jeopardize those plans.
He recently walked away from a 60 mph rollover crash with scrapes across his head, shoulder and back. The middleweight king put the blame on himself, calling himself an “idiot” for a silly mistake that could have cost him his life.
Sean Strickland Details 60 MPH Rollover in New Video
Strickland recently shared a series of Instagram videos to detail exactly what happened to him. The 35-year-old champion was a passenger in the off-road vehicle when his friend Chris Cornell lost control, and he hit the ground six times.

In one video, he said, “Guys I’m in a real bad place. I let my buddy drive, he rolled us going like 60 [mph], we rolled like six times. That’s from my head smacking the ground going 60. I didn’t have a helmet on, I’m an idiot.”
Sean Strickland says he got into an accident today:
“That’s from my head smacking the ground going 60 [mph]. I didn’t have a helmet on I’m an idiot. That was just from rolling and smacking the dirt.”

He could be seen shirtless in his room, showing off the fresh scrapes on his head and feeling visibly upset for not having a helmet. However, this isn’t his first high-speed scare outside of the cage. In December 2018, Strickland was hit by a van while riding his motorcycle at 45 mph in Los Angeles.
The violent collision knocked him completely unconscious for roughly three hours and the impact severely shattered his knee. Strickland later recalled waking up in a hospital bed just as doctors prepared to wheel him into emergency surgery.
“I left some of my kneecap on the road. I had a doctor coming up to me saying ‘you’re going to surgery’ and at that moment I started crying a little bit,” he said. “I just remember waking up like, ‘f***, I hope I can fight again.’ The only thing I’ve ever done in life was be a loser and be an MMA fighter. That hit me hard.”

While he managed to survive his latest desert rollover with only minor skin damage, the incident highlights a familiar pattern of risk-taking for the middleweight king.
Sean Strickland Downplays Crash Injuries Despite UFC Timeline Risk
Strickland later shared an update explaining that the situation was not as bad as he initially feared. While Cornell was knocked unconscious and rushed to the hospital with a broken bone, the driver is expected to recover soon.
“Think I’m OK, Chris is in the hospital but I think he’s going to be alright,” Strickland said. “It was the most fun I’ve had in a long time. My shoulder’s a little sore.” He also described himself as “a little concussed but good” and claimed he wanted to spar the next day.

That admission points to a major issue for the UFC. A concussion protocol, on top of the shoulder injury he already had, could easily push back his planned December title defense. It remains to be seen if the crash will cause a major setback for the champion heading into his targeted timeline.
