The UFC Vegas 121 main event delivered an all-timer as Raul Rosas Jr. and Raoni Barcelos went to war for nearly five rounds. What looked like a serious Fight of the Year contender, however, ended in an incredibly scary fashion when the 39-year-old Barcelos appeared to lose consciousness after a takedown in the final round.
The fight was fast from the opening bell, with Rosas Jr. coming out guns blazing. The 21-year-old immediately put pressure on the veteran, throwing combinations and forcing Barcelos to open up his own offense. Rosas landed a clean shot that caught Barcelos’ attention, prompting the Brazilian to shoot for a single-leg. Rosas quickly freed his leg and went straight back to letting his hands go.
Barcelos gradually found his rhythm and began closing the distance. That momentum carried into the second round, where he put together a huge offensive surge and landed nearly 60 significant strikes. Rosas continued pushing forward with crisp boxing, but the veteran absorbed the punishment and kept firing back. Barcelos also mixed in his wrestling, scoring a clean takedown, although Rosas was able to scramble back to his feet.

The pace never really dropped. Barcelos’ left eye began swelling badly late in the round, but he continued trading shots. There were moments when Rosas appeared to be one clean punch away from hurting his older opponent, yet Barcelos simply refused to back down. Both fighters returned to their corners bloodied after another wild round.
Round 3 brought more grappling into the mix. Barcelos scored a takedown and briefly established a dominant position, but Rosas showed why he is so dangerous off his back. He reversed position, got on top, and landed some solid ground-and-pound before the fight returned to the feet.
Barcelos continued mixing up his attacks and made Rosas work for every exchange. Late in the round, he scored another takedown and continued piling on damage, making the younger fighter pay for every mistake.
The fourth round was arguably Barcelos’ best. He took Rosas down again and worked his way into back control while landing punches. Rosas attempted several explosive escapes, but Barcelos kept finding ways to stay attached. He eventually locked up a rear-naked choke, forcing Rosas to fight desperately to survive.
Rosas escaped one submission attempt, only for Barcelos to threaten with another deep choke moments later. Somehow, the 21-year-old survived the round and made it back to his corner. Heading into the fifth, Rosas knew he likely needed something big. He came out with another burst of offense and even hyped up the crowd before getting back to work.

Barcelos slowed him down by taking the fight to the mat, but Rosas powered back to his feet and gestured toward the crowd. Then came the bizarre ending. Rosas got in on another takedown against the fence and completed a trip. As Barcelos hit the canvas, however, he appeared to go unconscious from the impact.
Rosas immediately noticed that Barcelos’ arms had gone limp and backed away from his ground-and-pound. The scene inside the UFC Apex quickly became uncomfortable. Barcelos remained motionless as medical personnel rushed into the Octagon. Replays offered little clarity, although one angle appeared to show Rosas’ head potentially catching Barcelos’ chin as they hit the ground.

Rosas initially celebrated the victory before realizing the seriousness of the situation. He then showed genuine concern as Barcelos was placed on a stretcher and carried out of the arena. The UFC officially awarded Rosas the knockout victory at 1:38 of Round 5.
Despite the stoppage, the scorecards showed just how competitive the fight had been. Barcelos was ahead entering the final round, winning Rounds 2, 3, and 4, with judge Chris Lee even scoring the fourth 10-8 in his favor.
The numbers backed up Barcelos’ performance. The veteran landed 193 total strikes compared to Rosas’ 161 and recorded nine takedowns while controlling the fight for more than six minutes against an opponent 18 years younger.
Thankfully, there was some positive news afterward. Brazilian UFC correspondent Evelyn Rodrigues reported that Barcelos was awake and conscious after being transported to a local hospital. UFC veteran Davi Ramos, a member of Barcelos’ team, also said on social media that his teammate had regained consciousness and was speaking at the hospital.

At this time, the UFC has not released the exact diagnosis on Barcelos condition or confirmed exactly what caused him to lose consciousness. Rosas, meanwhile, extended his winning streak to six and picked up the biggest win of his young career. But after such a bizarre and frightening ending, the result itself almost felt secondary. During his post-fight interview, the 21-year-old simply asked fans to pray for Barcelos.
