Joe Smith Sifting Options

Long Islander Joe Smith is in waiting mode as his promoter Joe DeGuardia ponders and sifts to attempt to find the right fit for Smith’s first fight after his shock and awe stoppage of Andrzej Fonfara.

“It could be a Fonfara rematch or Sean Monoghan, or something else,” said DeGuardia right hand man Ron Katz of the light heavyweight fast climber. Smith is rated No 2 by the WBC, with No 1 Eleider Alvarez apparently setting up to fight champ Adonis Stevenson, so a Stevenson tango would have to wait.

Looking ahead a bit more, Smith could really and truly be a meaningful part of a true pro boxing Renaissance on Long Island. The Nassau Coliseum is being refashioned, and as part of the Barclays conglomerate, having two sparkling destinations to house events, will uplift the whole scene. “We could have Joe, and Chris Algieri and Cletus Seldin there and easily sell it out,”‘ Katz said.

Editor/publisher Michael Woods became addicted to boxing in 1990, when Buster Douglas shocked the world with his demolition of the fearsome Mike Tyson. The Brooklyn-based journalist Woods has covered the sport since then, for ESPN The Magazine,, ESPN New York, RING, and he was editor of from 2007-2015. Woods is also an accomplished blow by blow and color man, having done work for Top Rank, DiBella Entertainment, EPIX, and numerous other organizations.
