Chavez Jr. vs Jack Near Done

By Michael Woods

He is the son of a legend, a somewhat colorful and mystifying personality and he enjoys a strong degree of interest in what he will do next because his career has a rollercoaster element to it.

Julio Cesar Chavez Junior promotions and bouts are..interesting…aren’t they?

And though his dad the legend just went public with a call for the kid to get serious, or get out of the game, Junior is soldiering on. Chavez Jr will likely fight WBC 168 pound champion Badou Jack April 30 at Staples Center, I am told.

Jr is age 30, a newish dad and is 49-2-1. He started off with Top Rank, and is advised now by Al Haymon.

Jack (20-1-1) is a 32 year old Swedish born boxer who lives in Vegas. He grabbed the belt off Anthony Dirrell a year ago and defended it versus Brit George Groves in September.

Jack is promoted by Floyd Mayweather and my ear to the ground tells me that one or some contractual deets, centering around weight, need to be wrapped up. It’s close.

Editor/publisher Michael Woods became addicted to boxing in 1990, when Buster Douglas shocked the world with his demolition of the fearsome Mike Tyson. The Brooklyn-based journalist Woods has covered the sport since then, for ESPN The Magazine,, ESPN New York, RING, and he was editor of from 2007-2015. Woods is also an accomplished blow by blow and color man, having done work for Top Rank, DiBella Entertainment, EPIX, and numerous other organizations.
