Vergil Ortiz Jr Wins Big in Las Vegas, On Canelo vs. Jacobs Card

on

Cinco de Mayo weekend has been one of the premier fight dates, where we get boxing’s mega stars to perform in front of the brightest lights.

Saturday nights’ co-main event features a young lion who is one of GBP’s blue chip prospects in Vergil Ortiz Jr. (12-0), at T-Mobile in Las Vegas, and on DAZN.

Ortiz Jr. surprised many as this fight was in the welterweight division and not at super lightweight, in which he has been campaigning at in previous fights.

Mauricio Herrera (24-8) is a journeyman and regardless of how old he is, there is always something about him that gives guys some trouble in the ring.

In 2014, he gave Danny Garcia a run for his money in a fight that many thought Herrera won. Tonight, he was looking to test the young Ortiz Jr. to see if he had the tools to be great in the future.

Here is how the fight unfolded this sizzling hot evening in Vegas:

Vergil Ortiz Jr.  vs. Mauricio “El Maestro” Herrera

Vergil Ortiz Jr. started off really patiently with the ear muff defense in the first round while trying to gauge Herrera’s style and power. An Ortiz Jr. left hook in the first round caught Herrera’s attention almost immediately and maybe injected the thought of a long night in the veteran’s mind.

In the second round, the counter straight right hand landed flush and hurt Herrera badly which led to another straight right hand that knocked down Herrera towards the end of the round. Herrera survived the second round but in the third, Ortiz Jr. landed a crushing straight right hand that ended the fight immediately.

Vergil Ortiz Jr. won by third round knockout.

Vergil Ortiz Jr. is the REAL DEAL! The question will be whether he tries to squeeze down to 140 and fight for a title there or remain at boxing’s premier weight class and look for bigger and better fights. Whichever decision he makes, he certainly has made himself “must see tv”.
