Andre Ward looked ripped and ready, while Russian rival Sergey Kovalev made weight and spoke volumes with his silence, as he looked to stare a dagger through Ward’s eyes at the weigh in held at Mandalay Bay in Vegas on Friday.
Both men weighed 175 on the dot, on the old school weighted balance scale. Ward will put up a parcel of light heavyweight crowns tomorrow in a fight pitting two of the top ten pugilists of the day.
Their stare down, as snapped in this David Spagnolo pic, saw Ward gesturing and yapping some and the Russian, who bitterly protested the judges’ call to deem Ward the winner in the first faceoff, look surly and silent.
Oh, what was Ward saying and gesturing for in this pic? “He kept talking to Sergey and I think he expected an answer,” Kovalev promoter Kathy Duva said. “But Sergey did not understand anything he was saying. Lot of noise. Language barrier. Same thing happened when Bernard Hopkins tried to taunt him. Complete waste of time!”
