No, Egis Klimas told me, I don’t think Mikey Garcia will pursue the fight that makes so much sense, Garcia versus Vasyl Lomachenko, for a simple reason.
“To get beat by Errol Spence, then Team Garcia will have an excuse,” Loma manager Klimas told me.
‘We got beaten by a bigger guy, up two weight classes,’ is what Klimas, who also handles Alexander Usyk and Sergey Kovalev, thinks the Garcia crew would say the night of his first pro defeat. “
Just like Guillermo Rigondeaux against Loma! But to lose to Loma, for Mikey, there’s no excuse!”
I messaged a Team Garcia contact, to see if they wanted to respond to Klimas’ theory and will insert the response if one arrives.
Me and Klimas chatted about whether maybe a grudge is holding back business. Maybe Garcia is still salty at Top Rank, who, he maintained, tried to force him into signing an extension. Garcia and Top Rank got into the mud in 2014, and in 2016, the two sides settled their beef. But maybe some salt is still in a wound, even one seemingly healed on surface…
“It could be another excuse,” Klimas continued. “Mikey is not fighting for glory.”
The manager…

..told me that he has discussed a Loma versus Mikey fight, with Mikey’s brother, the trainer Robert Garcia.
“But it was awhile ago,” Klimas said, in closing. “Sounded like they were interested, but you never know in this business, what people say and what they really want to do….”
