A big ole announcement will be dispensed by Shawn Porter, last seen in a darned fine outing in Brooklyn against Keith Thurman, this Saturday.
I tried like the Dickens to cajole at least a solid hint out of Porter’s pop, the trainer Kenny Porter, but the father’s defense is impregnable. “Can’t tell you, but I think you will be interested and excited,” the elder Porter told me.
This I was able to coerce out of him—-the occasion will not be to announce a rematch against the Floridian Thurman, who got the judge love and held on to his WBA 147 crown at Barclays Center. Team Porter is open to it, not so at least for right now Team Thurman, is my understanding.
Oh, another definite: Porter (23-2-1; age 28) will not be winning the Manny Pacquiao lottery ticket. They haven’t been asked.
And here’s a tidbit for you…I told Kenny I was heading over to Barclays tonight, for the Roc Nation charity hoops game. “Tell those guys we are happy to come to 154 to fight Cotto,” he stated. I told him I would. “We’d love to fight in Brooklyn again.”
More KP material. He hasn’t watched the Thurman fight on TV yet and Shawn hasn’t either, he doesn’t think. He’s respectful of those thinking Thurman won, but notes that his kid won the jab war, by a more than two to one margin. “So he was winning that, on the outside,” Kenny said. And the father/tutor said that it seemed apparent that his kid did the better inside work. So…inside, winning, outside, winning. But on the cards, losing. We discussed the clash, and I noted that in many rounds, I did get influenced by that one visibly harder power punch that Thurman landed.
But Shawn’s dogged effort and overall efficacy explains why all those punters booing Shawn before round one were booing the decision for Thurman after round twelve, he maintained.
My take: Shawn defended pretty well against the One Time bombs and dad is no slouch either, in ducking and slipping. We will have to wait for Saturday to get the scoop on this Shawn news.
