Leaders of the New School Give Their Prediction on Spence vs. Porter

On Saturday, September 28th live on Fox PPV from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, CA, there will be a welterweight unification battle between undefeated IBF Champion Errol “The Truth” Spence Jr. (25-0) and WBC Champion “Showtime” Shawn Porter (30-2-1).

The promotion of this fight has taken off in the last week or so, which started to really generate some buzz for this huge fight. Fox has shown that they are “all in” with this fight, which has seen promotion hits during NFL games and pre-game programming. 

When there is a fight of this magnitude, there are a ton of prediction articles with current champions and retired greats all over the Internet. I decided that I wanted to do something different and hear from those young prospects and contenders that are making noise in the boxing game while also having desires to one day see their name up on the marquee for a major fight.

First up is WBA-NABA Super Featherweight Champion Abraham “El Super” Nova (16-0; pictured below),  who fights out of Albany, NY and has already competed across the globe on several occasions. Nova’s take: ”Spence versus Porter is a 50/50 fight. Spence possesses the higher fight IQ and he will use that to better employ power punches. If I had to bet on one fighter, I would say Spence by points.”

While working as a full time police officer in Washington, DC, NABO Super Featherweight champion Tiara Brown (8-0) took a few minutes and had this to say about the fight. ”Errol wins by stoppage. I think Errol is the stronger, more talented fighter,” said Brown.  “I think that he will stop Porter in the later rounds. I do not think it will go the distance. I think the only reason Garcia went the distance is because Errol wanted to showcase his boxing skills.”

Next, we head to Vegas where I check in with Mayweather Promotion’s own Rolando “Rollies” Romero (9-0), who has had some highlight reel knockouts and he tells me that “Spence is the younger and stronger fighter and that “maybe late stoppage as Porter didn’t like the body shots Ugas gave him back in March.”

Diego Pacheco (6-0),  who had a huge knockout victory on DAZN a few weeks back said, “Porter is a great fighter who has fought some tough opponents but I grew up as a fan of Spence and I believe he will pull it out at the end by decision.”

While preparing for his next “Hollywood FightNights” card, George “El Phantasma” Navarro (6-0-1) messaged me and said “I think both fighters are elite and really strong. It won’t be easy but Spence will find a way to win. Porter is going to bring the fight to him using his strengths and non-stop pressure. It’s going to be a non-stop action war and in the end, I feel like Spence wins by decision. 

Anthony “A.G” Garnica (4-0) recently signed a promotional deal with Golden Boy and he mentioned the following. “It’s going to be a very competitive fight but my prediction is that Spence will outbox Porter and he will break him down round by round. Spence gets the W.”

Malik “Iceman” Hawkins (17-0; pictured below) who was a free agent not too long ago but now signed to Mayweather Promotions said. “I think Errol Spence wins by a late round stoppage. I feel Errol has the talent and the tools to adjust to Shawn’s wild fighting style and Errol’s punches are more compact so he has a better chance of doing more damage to Shawn Porter.”

Arnold Barboza Jr. (22-0) who resides out of L.A,  says “I have Spence by KO in the seventh round. Spence is just in his prime right now.He studies his opponents and uses his reach while countering immediately every fight. Porter is a great boxer but Spence is aggressive and this will tire out Porter. Although Porter has footwork, one wrong step can open up the KO.”

I reached out to NABF Middleweight champion Raquel “Pretty Beast” Miller (9-0) who spent some time training in South America but is now back in the states and she said,” I honestly don’t have a big prediction. I’ll be in attendance and just hoping for a good fight. May the best man win.”

From the looks of things, it appears the young fighters are all going with Errol Spence Jr. to pull out the victory.

Saturday night, the lights will be bright as ever and the crowds a little louder than normal for this unification fight on Fox PPV.

The winner could possibly face the Senator and current WBA Welterweight Champion Manny Pacquiao in 2020 or “cross the street” and fight the WBO Welterweight Champion Terrance “Bud” Crawford. 

Either way, the welterweight division is sizzling more than ever and this weekend’s results could be the first domino to fall on the path to having an undisputed champion at 147.
