Irish Boxer Andy Lee Expects Easy Night for Mayweather Against McGregor

on

Irish middleweight boxer Andy Lee expects an easy night of work for Floyd Mayweather come fight night.

Lee, the former WBO middleweight champion, said his countryman Conor McGregor would be in deep waters on August 26, the set night for the boxing star vs. MMA stalwart superfight.

Mayweather is a five-time lineal champion who has won 15 world titles in four different weight classes, including 154 pounds, the weight limit for the Mayweather-McGregor bout.

McGregor’s recent win over Eddie Alvarez for the UFC lightweight title established him as the first-ever, simultaneous two-division UFC champion. According to Sherdog.com, he is the No. 3 ranked MMA fighter in the world, pound-for-pound, and an established “historical great.”

Regardless of his impressive MMA credentials, Lee said Mayweather will easily defeat him inside a boxing ring.

“I think it’s an easy night for Mayweather,” said Lee. “He’ll pick McGregor off and more than likely won’t get hit with a meaningful punch all night.”

While McGregor is a stalwart striker by MMA standards, he is expected by most in the fight world to be out of his league against Mayweather, one of the best boxers of the last fifty years.

Per Oddsshark.com, the undefeated Mayweather is a heavy betting favorite two months ahead of the fight (-550) over McGregor (+375), and is likely headed to the 50th win of his professional career.

According to Lee, it isn’t if Mayweather will win, but how.

“The question is can Mayweather stop McGregor,” said Lee. “I don’t think so. McGregor is tough and Floyd doesn’t seem to have power at 154 pounds, so there’s a good chance McGregor will go the distance and if he does, then I guess that’s some kind of moral victory.”

Lee’s last bout was a March 2017 unanimous decision win over KeAndrae Leatherwood. The Irishman remains on course for another title shot soon, perhaps a rematch with WBO champion Billy Jo Saunders, who defeated Lee by majority decision in 2015 to snag the world title belt away from Lee.
