Jessie Vargas Wins Comeback Fight Over Aaron Herrera on Fox Sports 1

LANCASTER CA – Former WBO welterweight champion Jessie “Ruthless” Vargas (28-2, 10 KOs) dominated Aaron “La Joya” Herrera (33-8-1, 22 KOs) and earned a unanimous decision before a raucous crowd at the Pioneer Event Center Friday night.

The card was promoted by Premier Boxing Champions and televised on the Fox Sports1 network.

This was the first fight back for Vargas since losing his title to Manny Pacquiao in November of 2016.

“I felt the ring rust a bit to be honest so I was trying to keep my distance,” Vargas said. “Aaron Herrera came to fight [and] put up a good fight.  He kept pushing forward.”

Vargas dominated the bout from the opening bell, using a quick and sharp jab.  “Ruthless” utilized solid combination punching to keep Herrera off balance and never allowed La Joya to gain any momentum.  Vargas managed a knockdown of Herrera in the sixth round courtesy of an uppercut and right hand combination.  La Joya rose and finished the match on his feet.  All three judges scored the contest 100-89 in favor of Vargas.

Regarding his future, Vargas said, “[I’ll fight] any of them, Keith Thurman or Errol Spence. Also, Danny Garcia. I’m back.  I made a statement [tonight] that I’m back in the ring.”
