BJ Saunders Outclasses Lemieux to Retain WBO 160 Title, Calls Out GGG

LAVAL Quebec – Billie Joe Saunders (26-0, 12 KOs) showed a masterful understanding of distance and timing in dismantling David Lemieux (38-4, 33KOs) before a stunned crowd at the Place Bell Arena on Saturday night.

The fight was promoted by Golden Boy and televised on HBO.  Saunders won a unanimous decision.

“I know you’re booing me because I whipped your fighter’s ass.  I look easy to put down but you can’t hit me,” said Saunders after to Max Kellerman and the mostly pro-Lemieux throng.

Lemieux was not able to gain any kind of rhythm during the 12 rounds as Saunders kept circling the former world champion and landed punches at will. The British title holder often taunted and toyed with Lemieux throughout the contest.  The Canadian was never in the fight.

Sounding as confident as ever, Saunders said, “I’ve beaten enough dogmeat now. [Genaddy] Golovkin, you keep saying you want my WBO belt. Fight me now.  You’ll be punching fresh air.”

After how impressive Saunders looked tonight, a fight with the winner of GGG v. Canelo Alvarez does sound intriguing.  Lemieux told Kellerman he hurt his left hand in round two and that Saunders spent most of the time running.

Yves Ulysse Jr. (15-1, 9 KOs) completely embarrassed previously unbeaten Cletus “The Hebrew Hammer” Seldin (21-1, 17 KOs) over 10 rounds to hand the American his first professional loss via unanimous decision. Seldin was down in the first, second and third rounds.  All three judges scored it 99-88. Not sure how any judge found one round to give Seldin.

After a slow start, Gary “Spike” O’Sullivan (27-2, 19 KOs) finished off Antoine “Action” Douglas (22-2-1, 16 KOs) in the seventh. Douglas got off to a fast start in the first three rounds but eventually caved under the pressure of the relentless Irish puncher. Spike ended the contest with a flurry of power shots that left Douglas looking flaccid.
