$369 bucks, to change your life.
Sounds like a good deal, no?
What…Cynical, are we?
Think it sounds too good to be true?
I hear ya…
Tyically, that is so.
If something seems to be too good to be true, it usually is.
Where is the hidden cost? How life-changing are we talking, really?
Stay with me…
On April 13, Gleason’s Gym in DUMBO, Brooklyn, NY kicks off its seventh all-female boxing clinic at the gym. The clinic, featuring top tier instruction from female fighting standouts like Heather Hardy, runs April 13-15, and will culminate in an amateur show, sanctioned by USA Boxing. Participants learn boxing basics for two days and then, bang, they can put their learning into doing, on fight night.
For a personal adventure which is almost certain to get you out of a rut, feeling more fit, stronger physically, stronger mentally, on a path to be a better you.
You spend more than that in three months on your stupid cell phone package…
Jill Diamond, an executive at the World Boxing Council, the pre-eminent boxing sanctioning organziation in the world, will talk to clinic attendees. I asked her what she thinks of the event.
“Talent has no gender,” Diamond told me. “And after years of struggle women’s boxing is finally walking through the door pried open by the pioneers that preceded them: Christy Martin, Laila Ali, Mia St. John, Barbara Buttrick, and the many trainers and gyms that supported them. Gleason’s and gym proprietor Bruce Silverglade has always been there to support and cheer on the women athletes. More female champions have walked through his doors than any other major boxing gym. Boxing for women can sometimes be isolating and he has not only provided skills but community and information. This coming together of women from all over the world for the seminar at Gleason’s is an exercise in hope, skills and networking. Thank you, Bruce for being a champion to women!”
Silverglade fleshed out the structure of the clinic. “It’s a great weekend,” he said. “It’s my favorite weekend, of all the clinics and fight nights and events we do! It’s all women. The show, the public can attend that, it’s $20. And then we have our master’s tournament, in June. People come from all over the world..a lot of Germans and Australians come in. We went to London last week, we had nine people from Gleason’s! There were 13 bouts, businessman show.. I had two from Ireland, one from France, three from Germany and the rest were from London. The youngest was in his 30s, the rest were in their 50s and 60s. Two minute rounds, three rounds.” Note: Two of Bruce’s Germans got stopped, and, he theorized, that might be because they had too much fun the night before. Each had more than a bottle of vino at dinner, and paid for it in ring the next night.
Back to the clinic..You can sign up right until the day before the session starts. Email Bruce at firstname.lastname@example.org, or call 718-797-2872.
